How to wash a membrane jacket and restore its waterproofness?

Does rain stop beading off your jacket and start soaking in? First thought: the membrane in my jacket is broken. However, this doesn't necessarily mean the membrane is the problem. Often, the way outerwear is cared for is to blame.

Most membrane jackets don't lose their properties due to wear, but due to mistakes made during washing. Regular detergent, fabric softener, or too high a temperature can clog micropores and destroy the DWR coating. The result: the jacket stops breathing and, in turn, starts absorbing water.

The good news is that in most cases, this can be reversed. How to do it? We'll tell you!

Prevention is better than cure, or how to wash a membrane jacket so it protects against rain?

Start by checking the label. The manufacturer usually clearly states whether the jacket can be machine washed, what temperature to set, and whether tumble drying is allowed. Most models will advise washing at 30°C and setting a "delicate" or "outdoor" program.

Before washing, remember to properly prepare the jacket. Empty pockets, zip up zippers and Velcro fasteners, and secure all ventilation openings. This reduces friction and protects the laminate. It's also a good idea to turn the jacket inside out – the outer layer will wear less.

What to wash a membrane jacket with?

Regardless of whether your jacket comes from proven manufacturers of membrane clothing (e.g., Rossignol or Sportalm available at SportowyButik.pl) or was simply bought from a chain store, always use only liquids intended for technical clothing. Regular detergents can do more harm than dirt.

The membrane works thanks to micropores. Standard powders or liquids leave a residue that clogs these pores, causing the jacket to stop breathing and trapping moisture inside. Fabric softeners further weaken the DWR coating, which is the layer responsible for repelling water.

What washing machine settings should you choose to effectively refresh membrane jackets?

The best results are achieved with a gentle cycle, low temperature, and moderate spinning. These settings protect both the membrane and the seam bonding.

To ensure maximum safety for your membrane jacket during washing, select the "delicate," "synthetics," or "outdoor" program. The temperature should be in the range of 30–40°C. There's no point in setting it higher, as a higher temperature doesn't improve washing quality and can damage the laminate.

Regarding spinning, set it to a maximum of 600–800 rpm. Too high a spin speed increases friction and can weaken the material's structure. If the jacket isn't very wet, you can even skip the spin cycle entirely.

Does your washing machine have an extra rinse function? Use it. This is particularly important for technical clothing, as it helps remove any detergent residues that could clog the jacket's pores.

How often should you wash a membrane jacket?

Don't wash your membrane jacket "preventively." Washing only makes sense when the material is visibly dirty or when you feel it's no longer breathing.

For everyday use, the washing schedule is:

every 5–10 uses – after intense effort (e.g., women's ski jackets or men's jackets), less frequently for occasional use.

Remember that dirt and sweat block micropores even faster than washing itself. That's why it's not worth putting off cleaning for too long, especially for waterproof jackets and coats worn daily.

When the damage is done – restore your membrane jacket's waterproofing

A jacket's waterproofing primarily depends on the DWR coating, not the membrane itself. It is this layer that needs to be repaired.

How to check if the DWR coating is damaged? Do a quick and simple test: pour water over the jacket. If droplets form beads and roll off, everything is working as it should. If the material darkens and absorbs water, it's time for impregnation.

Methods for restoring waterproofing in a membrane jacket

Restoring waterproofing in a membrane jacket is not complicated. However, it requires the right approach.

Wash-in impregnator

This is an agent added directly to the wash. Its biggest advantage is that it works evenly across the entire surface of the jacket – it penetrates the material's structure and renews the DWR layer, causing water to bead on the fabric instead of soaking in. This type of solution can be considered convenient and quick, especially if the jacket has lost its hydrophobic properties over a larger area.

Spray impregnator

It is applied selectively, allowing you to focus on areas most prone to getting wet, such as the shoulders, hood, or chest area. Moreover, a spray provides more control over application than a wash-in impregnator, as it allows you to "add" protection where material wear is greatest.

Mixed method

The best results can be achieved by combining wash-in and spray impregnator methods. First, thoroughly wash the jacket with a specialized product for membrane clothing. Then, apply a wash-in impregnation to achieve general water protection. Finally, apply the spray to key areas.

How to activate the DWR coating after washing?

The DWR coating needs heat to work properly. Without it, the impregnation often doesn't achieve its full effect, and the user may feel the jacket is faulty.

If the manufacturer's recommendations on the label allow it, tumble dry the jacket for 10–20 minutes. Set a low temperature (approx. 30–40°C). This action is sufficient to reactivate the hydrophobicity.

There is also an alternative method: you can use an iron set to a low temperature. Iron the jacket through a thin cloth. This method requires more caution but works similarly to washing.

What to absolutely avoid when washing a membrane jacket?

Most problems are caused by simple errors that are easy to eliminate.

Do not use:

  • washing powders,
  • fabric softeners,
  • bleach,
  • harsh stain removers.

Also avoid high temperatures and long, intense programs. A membrane doesn't need "heavy washing"; it needs the right approach to perform its task 100%.

Summary

A waterproof jacket doesn't stop working overnight. Most often, it loses its properties due to small, repetitive errors during washing.

If you stick to three main rules – gentle washing, using the right detergent, and regular impregnation – the jacket will continue to protect against rain as it should, even after many seasons!
